POINT Experiment - Evaluation of Nashville's Teacher Bonus System
- by Vanderbilt University
In an effort to explore the impact of performance incentives in education, the National Center on Performance Incentives (NCPI) partnered with the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) to conduct the Project on Incentives in Teaching, or POINT. The study examines the effects on student outcomes of paying eligible teachers bonuses of up to $15,000 per year on the student test-score gains on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP). More specifically, the analysis is designed to address several impact areas, including student achievement, teacher behavior, organizational dynamics, unintended consequences, and cost effectiveness.

Teacher performance pay alone does not raise student test scores
- by Vanderbilt University
Great page that summarizes the research on pay for performance for teachers from Vanderbilt. Kind of summarizes things for those who don't have time to read the actual research reports. Excerpt: "We tested the most basic and foundational question related to performance incentives -- Does bonus pay alone improve student outcomes? - and we found that it does not," Matthew Springer, executive director of the National Center on Performance Incentives, said. "These findings should raise the level of the debate to test more nuanced solutions, many of which are being implemented now across the country, to reform teacher compensation and improve student achievement."

Why merit pay for teachers sounds good but isn't
- by Esther Quintero
Washington Post piece on the problems with merit pay for teachers. Excerpt: Although individual pay for performance (or merit pay) is a widespread practice among U.S. businesses, the research on its effectiveness shows it to be of limited utility (see here, here, here, and here), mostly because it is easy for its benefits to be swamped by unintended consequences.
Indeed, psychological research indicates that a focus on financial rewards may serve to (a) reduce intrinsic motivation, (b) heighten stress to the point that it impairs performance, and (c) promote a narrow focus reducing how well people do in all dimensions except the one being measured.
